Exhibit 8: Toe Touches on the Beach
My thoughts about this image...
For this image, I was just having fun in Carlsbad, CA taking photos of my daughter doing her cheerleader stunts on the beach. I only had my iPhone with me and was not intending to take photos that I might keep, but I loved how she appeared over the whitewash of the ocean and the action of the waves behind her frozen in time.
Saturation: The image itself was already pretty well saturated with the October Pacific ocean appearing a beautiful blue. The white waves were very white but still had definition. The sky was the only thing lost as I got rid of it entirely in favor of a brand new sky.
Alignment: One of the first things that I noticed on this image was that the horizon was not level. I fixed the horizon right away upon adding a new sky.
Proximity: The image makes you feel that you may need to jump as you are about to get wet from the ocean's surf. I played with the crop and got rid of much of the beach to give this illusion, retaining my daughter's full shadow on the sand.
Tools used included: Camera Raw, QuickMask, Lasso, Magnetic Lasso, Brush Tool, Crop Tool, Adjustment Layer, Refine Edge Mask, Onion Skin, and Exposure.
Here is the original untouched image:
